Saline tolerant fruit plantation for resilience community in Southwest Bangladesh

Koyra Upazila of Khulna district is one of the worst AILA affected area. Salinity is high in water and soil in this area. People cannot grow agriculture product normally. The physical environment has been damaged. Nutrition of the poor family members went to vulnerable condition. In this situation, LEDARS started work there in 2012 to enhance adaptation and copping capacity of the community in climate change. To increase resilience capacity of community people and accomplish the nutrition demand LEDARS distributed saline tolerant Fruit Plan on 25 July 2016

25 July 2016 at LEDARS branch office Dakkhin Bedkashi under Koyra upazila of Khulna district. Depending on local context LEDARS distributed total 1,800 Pieces saline tolerant Fruit Plant among 150 marginal farmers. The program is presided over by the Md. Showkat Hossain Program Officer (Training) of LEDARS. S.M. Mizan Mahmood Upazila Agriculture Officer (UAO) of Koyra Khulna was the Chief Guest of this program. Md. Abdul Mannan Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer South Bedkashi Koyra, Liton Kumar Mondal Chairperson of Angtihara Jorshing Farmers Cooperatives, Md. Mizanur Rahman Chairperson of Dakkhin Bedkashi Farmers Cooperatives and local government representatives presented as a special guest of this program.

5 types of saline tolerant Fruit Plant like “Coconut Tree, Guava tree, Lemon tree, Sour Wood Apple tree & Sobeda tree’’ were distributed by this program. 150 marginal farmers from Dakkhin Bedkashi Union of Koyra Upazila have been received 1,800 pieces of Fruit Plant. Per person received 12 pieces Fruit Plant. This Plant has been distributed under Strengthening Livelihood Security of Climate Change Vulnerable People project funded by Bread for the World. The chief guest said to the beneficiaries: Fruit Plant is a most important nutrition source of coastal people. This fruit plant will contribute to the nutrition demand of coastal people especially of our child.
