Rural women have been playing important role in agriculture, in the conservation of bio-diversity and the environment for centuries. Mostly communities of rural women have disseminated and carried forward local traditional and practices of agriculture. In Recognition of Women`s Role in Agriculture LEDARS organized Rural Women’s Agricultural Fair to celebrate ‘International Rural Women’s Day 2023’ under the ‘Community Based Resilience Women’s Empowerment and Action (CREA)’ project with the support of Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) and the Embassy of Sweden.
The fair was organized at Burigoalini Union Parishad campus of Shyamnagar under Satkhira district on October 26, 2023. Mr. Haji Nazrul Islam, Chairman, Burigoalini Union Parishad was the chief guest, and Mr. Md. Jamal Hossain, Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer and Mr. GM Abdur Rouf UP Member & Panel Chairman of Burigoalini Union were present as special guests. Mr. Alim Al Razi, Program Manager of LEDARS and Md. Arifur Rahman, Project Coordinator, LEDARS were also present at the Agricultural Fair. Sulta Saha, Project Officer, LEDARS conducted the discussion program at the fair. Women farmers from the project area showcased their agricultural products at the Rural Women’s Agricultural Fair and shared their experiences on how homegrown agricultural products save money and provide nutrition. Nazma Khatun, Women farmer of Gabura union and Sandhya Rani of Burigoalini Union shared their experience about homegrown agricultural products.
The chief guest of the fair Mr. Haji Nazrul Islam said that such type of innovative women’s agricultural fair encourages rural women to engage in homestead vegetable gardening. In this way, Rural Women can contribute to our agriculture and meet the nutritional needs of the family.
The special guest Union Agriculture Officer Mr. Md. Jamal Hossain said, I am overwhelmed by rural women coming to the agricultural fair. Rural women are growing a variety of crops around the house to meet the family’s nutritional needs, which is great news for this coastal region. Burigoalini UP Member and Panel Chairman Mr. GM Abdur Rouf expressed his thanks to LEDARS for organizing this agricultural fair by the women which will be inspired and encouraged others in Agriculture.
