Aimed to expand adaptive agriculture in coastal areas, LEDARS distributed 4940 kg of salt and drought tolerant paddy and vegetable seeds with 13920 kg of organic fertilizers to 1392 farmers at the head office of LEDARS on December 04, 2023 under “Strengthening Livelihood Security of Climate Change Vulnerable People by the support of German donor organization Bread for the World.
Mr. Md. Nazmul Huda, Upazila Agriculture Officer, inaugurated the seed and fertilizer distribution program as the Chief Guest while the program was presided over by Mr. Ranjit Kumar Barman, Executive Director (Acting) of LEADERS. He welcomed and thanked all present in this event through his welcome speech. He requested every farmers to ensure proper utilization of the seeds provided. Mr. Asim Kumar Mridha, Chairman of Munshiganj Union Parishad, Mr. Md. Masum Billah, Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer of Munshiganj Union and Mr. Suranjan Shekhar Mandal, representative from Upazila Social Service Office were also present in the program as special guests. Representatives of LEDARS and beneficiaries of Munshiganj and Ishwaripur Unions were present in this event.
The Chief Guest of the program, Mr. Md. Nazmul Huda emphasized that the more agriculture depends on technology, the more development in agriculture will expand. He advised to grow more vegetables besides rice and to include more green vegetables in daily food habit. He thanked LEDARS for identifying salinity and drought tolerant rice varieties at the present time and standing beside the government as well as the people in the agriculture sector. Mr. Asim Kumar Mridha told that LEDARS generally work in this area on 3 issues namely agriculture, water and various climate crises. He said that the people of Munshiganj Union have benefited more through these works of this organization. He expressed solidarity with all the developmental work of the LEDARS and wished for the all-round development of the organization.
It is noted that due to climate change, disasters have increased more than before. In order to overcome the damage caused by disasters and to increase the production of disaster tolerant agriculture and to encourage farmers to cultivate salt and drought tolerant rice in Boro season, 494 beneficiaries in five unions of Shyamnagar and Koira will receive 10 kg of drought and salt tolerant rice among each farmer. Seeds (Bangabandhu-100, Bri-67 and Bina-10) and vegetable seeds among 898 farmers and 10 kg of organic fertilizers have been distributed to each.
