To promote and protect gender transformative and responsive climate action, Gender Equality and Climate Alliance (GECA) was formed at Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira under the Community-based Resilience, Women’s Empowerment and Action (CREA) project implemented by LEDARS by the support of Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) and the Embassy of Sweden. GECA formation meeting was organized in Shyamnagar Public Library Hall Room, Shyamnagar, Satkhira venue on December 24, 2023. The objective of this Alliance is to promote and protect gender transformative and responsive climate action increasing the participation of grassroots women leaders and empowering them in addressing climate change impact.
Mr. Ranajit Kumar Barman, Executive Director (Acting) of LEDARS presided over the Alliance Formation Meeting held at Shyamnagar moderated by Ms. Sulata Rani Saha, Project Officer of CREA project. Md. Arifur Rahman, Project Coordinator, CREA delivered a welcome speech at this meeting. In this meeting, the local development organization, Coastal Education and Diversity Improvement Organization (CEDIO) was nominated as President, Joyeta Protibondhi Nari Unnayan Sangtha; as Vice President, LEDARS as Member Secretary and Nakshikantha as Organize Secretary by the consensus of all present there.
Mr. Manobendra Debnath, Assistant Professor of Shyamnagar Atorjan Women College, Ms. Chandrika Banerjee, Executive Director of Nakshikantha, Mr. Al Imran, Executive Director of CEDIO and Coordinator of NGO Coordination Committee of Shyamnagar, Ms. Ashtami Malo, Executive Director of Joyeta Protibondhi Nari Unnayan Sangtha; Pratima Rani Mistry, Executive Director of Marmi Mahila Unnaya Sanghta delivered their speech in this meeting. To ensure the empowerment and protection of women in Shyamnagar through the alliance, all the participants of this meeting have some specific proposals in line with the objective of the Alliance.
- Gender Equality and Climate Alliance meeting may be held in every three months;
- Respective organization should nominate a focal person to attend the meetings of the Alliance;
- Some other women’s organizations can be associated with this alliance;
- Organize relevant training and orientation on climate and women’s vulnerability per year;
- The Alliance may publish issue based publication at the end of each year;
- This alliance will work to stop nepotism and overlapping in providing services coastal women;
