LEDARS, Climate Advocacy Forum and likeminded organizations organized various events to celebrate World Water Day, 2024 in Satkhira, Khulna and Bagerhat.
On 22nd March, World Water Day 2024, LEDARS along with other like- minded organizations organized human chains, rallies, discussions and cultural programs in different regions of Bangladesh.
In Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira, a human chain and rally was organized by Upazila Climate Advocacy Forum and LEDARS. Freedom fighter Md. Master Nazrul Islam, Freedom fighter Mr. Debiranjan Mondal, Upazila Women Vice Chairman Ms. Khaleda Ayub Dolly and others expressed their solidarity for the right of safe drinking water in the event. More than 120 people stood with empty pitchers and made a symbolic protest demanding safe drinking water.
In Asashuni upazila of Satkhira, a human chain and rally was organized on the occasion of Water Day 2024 by LEDARS and Upazila Climate Advocacy Forum. Freedom fighter Mr. Md. Abdul Hannan, UP member Ms. Marufa Begum, and many others attended in the gathering and demanded safe drinking water for the coastal people.
A procession, discussion meeting and cultural programs were organized at Anirban Library by the joint initiative of Sundarban O Upokul Surakkha Andolan and LEDARS at Paikgacha in Khulna. Md Rashiduzzaman, Hon. M.P. of Khulna-06 presided over the event. He said, “Water balance should be maintained in the environment. We have to give importance on proper use of water. It is our duty to save nature.”
In front of Bagerhat Press Club, a joint initiative of LEDARS and District Climate Advocacy Forum organized a human chain and rally demanding safe drinking water. More than 100 people including the Members of Bagerhat District Climate Advocacy Forum participated in the event.
Rally, human chain and round table meeting was organized by LEDARS, Water Keepers Bangladesh, Pashur river waterkeepers at Mongla in Bagerhat. The UNO Mr. Narayan Chandra Pal chaired the round table meeting including 50 others prominent figures of the upazila. Mayor of Mongla Port Municipality Freedom Fighter Sheikh Abdur Rahman, and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Habibur Rahman also spoke in the event. 140 coastal people participated in the human chain and rally with empty pitchers.
Speakers in various programs of Water Day mentioned about 3 crore people cannot collect safe drinking water, and one and a half crore people are forced to drink saline water from underground. They raised their demands to ensure safe drinking water in the south-western coastal region. They emphasized on special budget allocation and priority projects in the fiscal year 2024-25 to ensure sustainable and permanent solution of drinking water for all.
