LEDARS in partnership with KHANI organized a boat chain on the river of Kholpetua adjacent of Sundarban area of Shyamnagar, Satkhira for demanding the food security of the southwest coastal people who have been repeatedly affected by the disaster caused by the climate change. The event was held on October 25, 2021 as part the campaign for food rights. The demonstration said that ‘the region is experiencing repeated storms and tidal surges due to global climate change. Wealth and loss of life is happening every day. Thousands of families have been losing their homes causing the disaster. They are losing agricultural and fishery resources, fleeing to escape the waterlogged life. At the same time, many of them have no food or drinking water. Their lives are getting sick due to lack of nutritious food. Food and nutrition security may save these people. The sustainable embankment is required along with the food security. Apart from rehabilitation opportunities in agriculture and fisheries, employment should be provided to the coastal people. Building sustainable housing for them has also become urgent.
The event was presided over by the Freedom Fighter Md. Afaz Uddin. The local people like Tiger victim widow described their vulnerability before the common people and media. They seek their demand of the food security along with the sustainable embankment. Around 200 people along with 72 large/small boats participated in this movement.
