The demand was made at a human chain organized by the Satkhira District Climate Advocacy Forum in collaboration with the LEDARS at DC Office Premises in Satkhira on March 21, 2022. The human chain was presided over by Md. Anisur Rahim, Convener, Satkhira Citizen Committee.
The climate change causes of severe crisis to the people of south west Bangladesh. People are suffering huge problem like flood, drinking water sacristy, embankment collapse, declining of agriculture and livelihood opportunities, etc. Lots of people are migrating from the coastal area. But the area is deprived justified allocation from the national budget. It is crying need to give special allocation to stop the climate induced migration from coastal area. LEDARS and likeminded organizations have been organizing series of activities to raise the demand to national level. Therefore, they demanded to declare the south-west coastal region of Bangladesh as a disaster risk area.
Mr. Madhob Chandra Datta, Member Secretary of Satkhira Advocacy Forum, Executive Director SODESH, Mr. Abul Kalam Azad, Member Satkhira Advocacy Forum, Mr. Ali Noor Khan Babul, Member Advocacy Forum, Mr. Advocate Fahimul Hoque, Kislu, Member Advocacy Forum, Mr. Sheikh Afzal Hossain, ED, Sundarban Foundation, Member Advocacy Forum, Ms. Farida Akter Beauty, Member Satkhira Advocacy Forum, Khurshid Jahan Shila, Member Satkhira Advocacy Forum, Mr. Mohonto Kumar Haldar, President, Union Climate Ressilience Forum, Sobnali, Assasuni delivered their Speech. The speakers demanded that effective measures to be taken to improve the living standards of the people of the coastal areas through human chain and discussion. In the future, the interests of the people at risk of disaster should be given priority in the adoption of government projects. Therefore, permanent and strong embankments need to be rebuilt to cope with the effects of climate change and disasters. After the human chain, the District Climate Advocacy Forum handed over a memorandum to Hon’ble Prime Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Satkhira.
