The southwest coastal farmer has been facing difficulties to their cultivation due to salinity intrusion in the cultivable land. Considering this, the non-governmental development organization LEDARS, with the financial support of Bread for the World, distributed salt tolerant vegetable seeds to the leader of 786 Climate Resilient Groups on June 3, 2021. The Honorable Prime Minister of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh has directed to take urgent measures on food production to address the food crisis in the Corona situation. In this context, in order to increase the production of vegetables in the backyard in response to COVID-19, LEDARS distributed 31,440 packets of vegetable seeds (Potatoes, Gourds, Sweet pumpkin and Cucumber) among total 786 poor farmer families from 4 unions of Shyamnagar Upazila and 2 unions of Assasuni Upazila of coastal Satkhira district and Dakshin Bedkashi union of Koyra upazila of Khulna district. Mr. SM Enamul Islam, Upazila Agriculture Officer of Shyamnagar inaugurated the distribution as the chief guest. Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer, Shyamnagar Mr. Md Jamal Hossain, LEDARS’ Program Manager Project Coordinator, Monitoring Officer, Agriculture Officer and others were present in the occasion. The event was executed by Knowledge and Research Manager. In his speech the chief guest said “the seeds should be planted at home cultivation needs to be increased and planting of salt tolerant varieties in this area will improve the yield”.
