LEDARS organized two days workshop on 30 July to 31st July, 2018 on climate change issue for local media personnel at Center for Coastal Climate Resilient (C3R) to enhance capacity of media personnel to publish and broadcast news on climate change and peoples sufferings. The program was organized under the project of Strengthening Livelihood Security of climate change vulnerable people funded by Bread for the World. The Deputy Commissioner of Satkhira district Mr. Md. Iftekhar Hossain inaugurated the program. Deputy Commissioner focused to present constructive news and advised to create attention to international and national forum on climate change impact in Bangladesh. He also said that the workshop is important for improving the reporting skill of the media personnel.
In this workshop participants received knowledge on climate change concept, its impact and adaptation especially in Bangladesh. Participants also received knowledge of importance for preparing report on climate change issues, techniques of preparing news for print media and report of climate change issues related with gender.
The inauguration program was presided over by Mr. Kamruzzaman, UNO Shyamnagar Upazila. He said that LEDARS is working to reduce climate vulnerability of the local people and it contribute ultimately the national development. Mr. Mohon Kumar, Founder and Executive Director of LEDARS delivered welcome speech and he presented LEDARS activities at a glance and clarified the objective of the workshop. Mr. Muhshin UL Mulk, Upazila Chairman (Acting) was attended as special guest. Mr. Muhshin UL Mulk appreciated LEDARS to organize the workshop on climate change issue. Mr. Salim Hossain, Upazila project implementation officer and Mr. Shohel Choudhury, BRDB officer was also present in the Inauguration program. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Shrifullah Kaiser Sumon, Reporter Desh TV & BD news, Amina Bilkis Moyna, Reporter Channel 24, Satkhira.
The workshop participants visited in the climate vulnerable areas as field visit and created numbers of creative news. At the end of the workshop they have prepared one year plan when and what topic they will broadcast the news in their respective newspaper with their regular news. The workshop was participatory and media personnel expressed their gratitude and thanks to LEDARS. LEDARS have been working with climate vulnerable people since 2003 with a view to strengthen livelihood security of climate vulnerable people in southwest Bangladesh.
