The southwest costal area of Bangladesh is already experiencing the impacts of climate change through irregular rainfall pattern, floods, cyclone, saline intrusion, sea level rise, tidal surge. Resulting these, freshwater ponds are submerged in high saline water in the embankment breach area. Crisis occurs in water used for other purposes including drinking water. Affected people, Shyamnagar Youth Forum and Sundarbans Press Club executed a Human Chain, coordinated by LEDARS under the financials support of Bread for the World, at Munshigonj Bus stand at 12 noon on April 19, 2021 with empty jugs demanding safe drinking water. The The human chain was presided over by Ms. Molina Rani Raptan, UP member, 9 no Burigoalini Union, Shayamnagar, Satkhira. Mr Jahangir Alom, adviser, Sundarban Press Club was present as the chief guest; in his speech he said “Another name for water is life. Due to high tides, the embankment is breaking and the source of drinking water is being wasted again and again. Demands to the government to build sustainable embankments and ensure safe drinking water to alleviate human suffering” In this initiative a total of 51 individuals included Male 35 and Female 16 participated. The different advocate including effected people, member of youth forum, member of Sundarban Press Club and staff member of the LEDARS participated.
