LEDARS provided training to the Local Government representatives on development of Local Adaptation Plan of Action in village and union level. Coastal area of Bangladesh is highly vulnerable due to negative impact of Climate Change. The people of Coastal area are suffering various problem due to rising of sea level, increasing of salinity, river erosion, water logging, irregular rainfall, cyclone, etc. A lot of NGOs along with Government are working for climate change adaptation with the vulnerable people. But due to lack of local adaptation plan of Union Parishad (UP)/local government authority, sometimes the achievements of NGOs and Government initiatives does not sustain.
To sustain the achievement of NGO and Government initiatives, it is important to make a holistic adaptation plan of a each village, ward and UP. LEDARS is piloting this initiative with two UPs in Shyamnagar Upazila. The Gabura and Burigoalini UP signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with LEDARS and Upazila Administration to prepare the Local Adaptation Plan of Action (LAPA). According to the plan of LAPA activities, a two days long training workshop has been held at LEDARS Training Center in Munshigonj dated on 21-22 May 2017. Elected male and female members, Chairman and Secretary of the two UP were present at the training session. Adaptation and mitigation in daily life, characteristic of climate smart village, concept of Climate Change, Funding sources of CC adaptation activities, Climate Change development and reality, procedures to preparation of vulnerability map, find out climate change vulnerability and action plan with participatory way, priority project selection according to vulnerability and risk assessment etc, has been discussed in the workshop.
S.M Mohshin-ul-Mulk, Acting Upazila Chairman, Shyamnagar Upazila Parishad, was present as the Chief Guest at inaugural sessions. Md. Ali Azom Titu, Chairman of the Gabura and G M Abdur Rouf, Panel Chairman of Burigoalini Union Parishad were the special guest of the event. Mohon Kumar Mondal, Executive Director of LEDARS presided over the inaugural session.
